Ethiopia’s Geleto wins gold at boys’ 1000m

ETHIOPIAN distance runner Mohammed Geleto won the Youth Olympic Games’ Boys’ 1000m race with a time of 2min 19.54sec.

The 16-year-old was pushed all the way to the finish line at the Bishan Stadium on Sunday morning by Hamza Driouch of Qatar who took silver in 2:21.25.

In the Girls’ 200m, Nigerian Florence Nwakwe took the gold medal in a time of 23.46sec, just ahead of Tynia Gaither (23.68sec) of the Bahamas. Olivia Ekpone of the United States was third in 23.75sec. All three timings were personal bests.

Meanwhile in the boys long jump, Brazilian Caio Dos Santos cleared 7.69m on his final jump to win the gold medal, edging out Japan’s Sho Matsubara who was just four centimetres behind with his best effort of 7.65m.

The athletics programme will continue Sunday night. Nine golds will be up for grabs.
