US environmental protection official visits Ethiopia
APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Lisa P. Jackson, is visiting Ethiopia on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss with senior Ethiopian officials “issues of importance to the U.S. and Ethiopia, including protecting children’s environmental health, improving indoor air quality through clean cook stoves, and managing electronic waste.”
According to the USA embassy in Ethiopia, Jackson will meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and leaders from Ethiopia’s Environmental Protection Authority.
Jackson will also join female members of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences to speak with students from Addis Ababa University about opportunities for women to take leadership roles in addressing environmental issues facing Ethiopia.
“She will also receive a site-briefing and tour an e-waste de-manufacturing facility to highlight improved e-waste management and affirm the U.S. commitment to supporting innovation in the management of electronic waste,” said the embassy.
Lisa P. Jackson will also participate in a demonstration of clean cook stove technology with civil society groups, and learn about the work of local non-governmental organizations.
“The visit to Ethiopia is part of a larger effort to further the U.S. Government’s support of environmental protection in Africa,” it said.
Administrator Jackson’s meetings in Ethiopia will advance the U.S. Government’s recently announced international environmental priorities and strengthen U.S. relationships with environmental counterparts in Ethiopia and other African nations,” added the embassy.
