Staying Tuned: 5 Love Lessons Learned from Celebrities

Read Time:4 Minute, 3 Second

“Everybody knows what I used to be.  Now, I’m a man of integrity.”

–Usher on love and his marriage

Celebrities live in the eye of the public, both on TV and off.  As fans, our eyes are fixed on the screen.  We cheered on Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) to be with Big in Sex and the City and Rachel (Jennifer Anniston) seemed to have been the perfect fit for Ross in Friends but as faith (screen writers) would have it, Carrie and Rachel had a few more frogs to kiss before nestling down with their prince.  Off the screen, the real lives of our favorite stars are further from fairytales and happy endings.

To avoid cancellations in your own relationship, just tune in more closely during the next episode of TMZ, and oh yeah…follow these 5 love lessons learned from our favorite celebrities:

Don’t be Afraid to Stay

In Runaway Bride, Julia Roberts plays Maggie Carpenter, a woman who runs away and leaves her grooms at the last possible minute.  In real life, Julia Roberts has been married for 6 years to Daniel Moder, they have three children.  If you are a “runner” meaning you have always ran away from relationships, then it is time to rethink your priorities and ask yourself, is love worth the risk you associate it with being?

Know What a Great Catch You Are

Halle Berry has made inspiring accomplishments as an actress and paved the way for so many others.  Her name alone is synonymous with beautiful but her love life was full of anything but.  For years she struggled with depression and low self-esteem.  In 2001, Halle married Eric Benet they separated in 2003 and filed for divorce in 2004, their divorce was final in 2005.  Eric’s infidelities have been said to be the cause of their marriage coming to an end.  Loving someone else begins with taking care of you and loving yourself first.  Be confident in knowing that you are a great catch and anyone would be lucky to have you for a mate.

Take a Chance

Usher Raymond must have an undeniable attraction for older women, he and celebrity stylist Tameka Foster wed last August in the office of Usher’s lawyer.  Tameka, the same age as Chilli, is 8 years older than Usher.  Usher’s mother, and former manager, was not in attendance at the wedding, there have been reports that the two women did not get along.  Despite false rumors that Usher and Tameka are seperated, their wedding is intact.  Usher has been quoted as saying “Everybody knows what I used to be.  Now, I’m a man of integrity.”  When it comes to love, you should only follow your heart, no matter what anyone else has to say.  Take a chance even if it means you will fall flat on your face in front of the whole world, because at the end it will be worth it.

Learn to Let Go

Jennifer Anniston’s picture-perfect marriage to Brad Pitt ended in divorce in 2005.  Aniston blamed her unhappy childhood for the problems in her own marriage and admitted that her negative attitude played a role in the breakdown of their marriage.  We are people full of hurt with deep wounds that can easily damage any relationship.  Instead of living in the past, learn to let go of all the things that went wrong and focus your energy on making the relationship right and bright.  This means learning to forgive and not holding any grudges.  How else can your relationship grow if you cannot let go?

Be Honest

While Jada Pinkett was turned down for the role of Will’s girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air in 1995, because she was considered to be too short, she was not turned down to be his wife!  Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith have now been married for 11 years, it has been said they have an open marriage.  Whatever the case may be, their union is built on honesty and honesty really is the best policy.  On the subject of divorce, Will has been quoted as saying, “With Jada I stood up in front of God and my family and said, ’till death us do part’.  Divorce cannot be an option … I honestly believe there is no woman for me but Jada.”

Whether it is having issues with letting the past go or having low self-esteem, we really can learn from the celebrities we watch!  Who knows, maybe the next episode of TMZ can be similar to therapy or maybe while browsing through People magazine on the supermarket line, your personal relationship may change for the better.  Whether you believe it or not, everyday there are important lessons that we can learn from celebrities-if we only tune in a little closer.
