Road accident in Ethiopian capital leaves 20 dead, several injured

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) At least 20 people died and several were injured on Saturday in a tragic road accident in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
The incident occurred when a truck with a 6-tonne container over-turned in an open market in the western part of Addis Ababa, hitting several traders and vendors at the market.
It took hours for the rescue team to remove bodies under the container.
A majority of the dead bodies were so badly disfigured that they were difficult to identify.
The Addis Ababa traffic bureau said that the truck was out of control before it over-turned at the open market.
The death toll is expected to rise since there were many whose injuries were quite serious.
Ethiopia is one of the countries with the highest traffic accidents with over 2,000 people dying annually on the roads.

Well I have lived here for some time now and really this doesn’t surprise me. Even on small streets, their is excessive speeding all the time with cars, trucks, bajaj’s etc. Very little traffic police and the vehicles really are not inspected for safety, ie bald tires, overweight etc. Part of this because of the lack of money of not just the driver, but the government also to enforce speed limits. Even many of the drivers are unlicensed or the license has expired. Also alot of vehicles at least bajaj’s aren’t even insured. They know where the police sit, so they avoid them by taking a different route. I can’t remember ever seeing speed limit sign at least not in Dire Dawa. Shame this had to happen. God rest their souls.
Driving under Khat/Chat influence is outlawed in Ethiopia but it is the hardest task for police to determine who is under the influence of chat/khat and who is not. The Tigray police chief commented that by law police officers are entitled to detain any body caught with the possesion of Khat . He also added khat is labeled as a narcotics substance in Tigray only. The reason behind this law singling out Tigray and keeping alcohol consumption legal while operating an automobile is something the rubber stamp parliament of Ethiopia came up with during the early stages of Ethiopian parliament liberation from Eritrean control. ..
