Movie Review: ‘Sex and the City’

The glamour. The glitz. The fashion. This is what makes ‘Sex and the City’ the hit that it is. This and the juicy plot full of twists complimented by actors who have become our girlfriends—well sort of.

Four years has passed since the hit HBO series ended, the same time in which we pick up with the girls we love on the big screen. Like a reunion with old friends, while plenty of things have changed in their lives, we don’t feel as though we are left out of the loop. We are able to connect with them instantaneously. The movie, which opened nationwide on May 30th, surpassed my expectations. It evoked many emotions from myself and audience members that sat nearby. At times we were moved to tears and sat at the edge of our seats, at the end everyone in the theater cheered loudly.

When ‘Sex and the City’ first aired in 1998 it defied mainstream culture, a couple of girlfriends dealing with issues in a social perspective such as safe sex, STD’s and mainly confronting issues that women in society faced during that time. A decade later, the girls are still defying the culture in which we live in. Just like the TV series, fashion plays a prominent role during this film. Patricia Field, the stylist, created over 300 looks for the film. Sarah Jessica Parker alone made 81 outfit changes! Nonetheless, the clothes worn by all in this film will leave you speechless in that star struck kind of way.

Narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie, after moving in together into a beautiful apartment in New York with Big (Chris Noth), Carrie and Big make a hasty decision to get married. What was supposed to be a small wedding ceremony of 75 guests turns into a lavish wedding of 200 guests. Meanwhile, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), who at 50-her true age-and divine as ever, is living in California with Smith (Jason Lewis). She has done the unimaginable for her, which is to be in a committed relationship; needless to say she is unhappy. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) lives a happy life with her supportive husband and finally succeeds at becoming pregnant. She is so terrified of jeopardizing her pregnancy that she is unable to continue regular activities. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is unforgiving and angry at her husband Steve (David Eigenberg) for having an affair. Upset at Steve, and thinking of her own situation, she mistakenly tells Big that he is crazy to get married.

Will Carrie finally seal the deal with her Big? No spoilers here, to find out you have to watch. This movie will soon be available on DVD from New Line Home Entertainment and I can’t wait to get my copy!
