“There is something special about New York City…”
-Hebist Teruneh, Singer & Performer

“New York – get ready!” That was the advice of DJ Mengie of Massinko Entertainment regarding this weekend’s performance of Hebist Teruneh and Bezuayehu Demessie in New York City. The two artists are gearing up to kick off what will be an eventful summer of live Ethiopian music in New York.

Here in the Big Apple, such performances are few and far between. But this summer will be exceptional as New York will host a number of Ethiopian artists including the popular Teddy Afro who is scheduled to perform in July. This Saturday, May 15th, it will be the sounds of Hebist and Bezuayehu that will grace the NYC crowd at the world famous SOB’s.

Ever since she was a young child, Hebist has had a passion for singing. Recording professionally since the age of 14 (the youngest to do so) the mother of two possesses powerful vocals along with a commanding stage charisma. With less than a week before her performance, she is eager to be in New York. “There is something special about New York City,” Hebist tells TsehaiNY.com. “I am excited and looking forward to performing for the NYC crowd.”

Hebist will be accompanied by Bezuayehu. Bezuayehu gained a great deal of popularity by singing songs from the legendary Muluken Melesse.  Numerous singers have tried to emulate the sound of Muluken but no one comes closer than Bezuayehu.  His version of Muluken’s classic melodies is crisp and on-point.

DJ Mengie, an experienced promoter in the New York area, can attest to the changes within the Ethiopian community around New York throughout the years. “The crowd has gotten a lot younger nowadays and a growing number of individuals are moving here from places like D.C. and Boston.”

With habeshas scattered throughout New Jersey and the 5 boroughs, such events are crucial to keeping us connected with one another. There is no doubt that this summer will be unlike any other, here in New York.
