APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) At least 19 people died and more than 20 were injured by a landslide in Ethiopia due to the on-going heavy rains in the country, Ethiopian police said here on Wednesday.

The landslide occurred late on Tuesday following heavy rains in a town called Mersa, in the Amhara regional state, located some 500 kilometres north of Addis Ababa.

The Ethiopian rainy season, which often starts by mid-May, ends by mid-September, with some parts of the country getting rains as early as February and April.

In the past few weeks, the heavy rains resulted in the deaths of several people, with thunder and heavy winds causing power interruption in and around Addis Ababa, home to around five million people.
