Gete Wami comes in second in the ING New York City Marathon.

Read Time:52 Second

At the end, Gete Wami couldn’t find the strength to pull off and finish first at ING’s New York City’s marathon which took place Sunday November 3, 2007.  In a dramatic duel along with Paula Radcliffe of Britain, Ethiopia’s Gete Wami took the lead briefly with about a mile to go, but couldn’t hold against Radcliffe who was running her first marathon in two years after taking a maternity break.  Radcliffe won by 23 seconds in 2 hours 23 minutes and 9 seconds.

Gete Wami, who was running her second marathon in 35 days, was attempting to achieve a feat that has never been done before.  Professional runners usually run one or two marathons a year, let alone two in a matter of two months.  Wami finished second in 2:23.32, but her consolation prize was actually larger than the winner’s.  Wami took home $370,000 more than Radcliffe.  She received the $500,000 pay out because she was the winner in the World Marathon Majors serious.
