Gebre Gebremariam sets a record in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia has used a sprint finish to set a course record in the Healthy Kidney 10K race in Central Park. Gebremariam finished in 27 minutes, 42 seconds on Saturday in only his third pro road race. Fellow Ethiopian Tadese Tola set the previous mark of 27:48 last year Gebremariam and Peter Kamais of Kenya dueled from the start before the winner pulled away on a slight uphill with 200 meters to go. Kamais placed second in 27:49 and fellow Kenyan Julius Kogo was third Gebremariam earned $7,500 for the victory and a $20,000 bonus for the course record.
