Ethiopia: Opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa to be released
Jimma Times: According to sources in Addis ababa, the leader of the largest opposition party Judge Birtukan Mideksa is expected to be released this week. Some sources inside Ethiopia’s “Elders Committee,” which negotiated her released during her first imprisonment, said Birtukan could be released as early as Wednesday.
Meles has previously declared “There will never be an agreement with anybody to release Birtukan. Ever. Full stop. That’s a dead issue.” Sources in Ethiopia suggest it is unlikely that the recent successful negotiations involved Birtukan apologizing to the government and analysts believe the government is trying to repair its damaged image after what critics said was an embarrasing election that led to a one-party parliament. Local reports said Birtukan did not ask for a pardon in the latest “deal” with the government negotiated by elders led by former Harvard University Professor Ephraim Isaac.
