While studying at Addis Ababa University Medical School, Dr. Muleta met the founders of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Reginald and Catherine Hamin.   After graduating, Reginald Hamin recruited Dr. Muleta to work at the hospital.

Through her work at The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital Dr. Muleta became part of the team that performed over 1,200 surgeries each year and treated patients from countries such as Uganda, Sierra Leone, Kenya, and Sudan.  In addition, Dr. Muleta and her team have trained surgeons who have set up health centers in their respective countries.  Consequently, Dr. Muleta’s work spans across Africa.

Kate Grant, the Executive Director of The Fistula Foundation-an organization that financially assists Dr. Muleta’s work-tells TsehaiNY, “Dr. Mulu Muleta is a deeply inspiring woman.  She has dedicated her life and talents to treating otherwise forgotten women suffering from the heartbreaking childbirth injury obstetric fistula, returning them to a state of health and dignity.  I am honored to consider Dr. Mulu both a colleague and a friend.”

Through her work with WAHA Dr. Muleta is expanding her reach globally.  WAHA is a not-for-profit organization that is on a mission to work in partnership with others to improve access to essential healthcare services for women and newborns in disadvantaged communities throughout the world.  WAHA has impacted the lives of women in places such as Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Yemen.

Dr. Muleta has worked for 18 years as a fistula surgeon.  Mother of two, she holds a Masters Degree in Public Health and a Ph.D. from Bergen in Norway.

  1. I do feel very pleased at Dr. Mulu Muleta’s success. I do remember we were in the same school when we were in the junior secondary. She was one of the top students then, too. We have never met each other since we completed 8th grade. I only once heard that she was in the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa.
I do appreciate her unreserved endeavors which brought about internationally recognized success.

I would like to say “Congratulations! Keep up keeping up.” to her. One can learn a lot from her story.

    All the best.
