That is the philosophy of Dr. Rick Hodes, the subject of a new HBO documentary called Making the Crooked Straight. Hodes has spent the last twenty years of his life to healing the sick in Ethiopia. The title of the film comes from the fact that many of his patients suffer from a spine disease that creates massive humps on their backs. This tuberculosis of the spine prevents their lungs from working properly and leads to death if untreated.
Faced with overwhelming odds, Hodes has never wavered in his commitment to everyone of his patients. But his humanitarian efforts don’t end there. He has also become a foster father to 17 children, providing them with medical care, shelter and an education.
This inspiring documentary is the work of filmmaker Susan Cohn Rockefeller who has produced and directed several films showing “the passions and joys of the human experience.” The film’s premiere on HBO coincides with the release of a book about the doctor, titled “This is a Soul: The Mission of Rick Hodes and both go a long way to proving the point that one man can indeed make a difference.
Making the Crooked Straight premieres tonight, April 14, at 8:00 pm on HBO and will repeat throughout the month.
