First Sunday: Amidst Laughs, Important Lessons Are Learned

On the surface, First Sunday may look like your average typical urban flick, but at the core of this movie lies lessons we can all learn from.

Somewhere between Friday and Are We There Yet, things began to progress not only in Ice Cube’s career but also in the film industry.  While big things are happening for Ice Cube and his future as an Actor, Musician, Producer, Writer (the list goes on and on) the small things did not lose their way.  First Sunday grips at the heart and is not afraid to explore the dynamics of the lives of African Americans.  Writer and Director, David E. Talbert takes us through a range of emotions from laughing-out-loud to deep.

Best friends Durell (Ice Cube) and LeeJohn (Tracy Morgan) play criminals in this highly amusing film, which takes place in Baltimore, Maryland.  Both are faced with the challenge of getting their hands on $17,000 when Durell’s ex-girlfriend plans on moving out-of-state with their son in order to pay off a debt.  Frustrated, they come up with a plan to rob the neighborhood church, First Hope Community Church.  The joke is on them when they come to realize that someone has already taken the church’s money. The search for the thief results in an unexpected turn of events.

First Sunday is a warm film about forgiveness and second chances.  Its cast includes Katt Williams, Loretta Devine, Chi McBride and Malinda Williams.  Miss New York of ‘I Love New York’ makes her film debut and she is right on time!

So, if you are looking for a different kind of comedy that offers big laughs and an important lesson or two along the way, then check out First Sunday, you’ll be glad you did!  For more information and video clips on this film, visit
