A Walk to Beautiful Receives An Emmy Award Nomination

It all started when a close friend mailed film-maker Steven Engel an Op-Ed section from the New York Times about a fistula problem with a sticky-note asking “what do you think?” Not too long after Engel and his team began work on a documentary titled A Walk to Beautiful. The rest, as they say, is history.

TsehaiNY has learned A Walk to Beautiful has been nominated for a 2009 Emmy Award by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, in the category of Outstanding Informational Programming – Long Form, for the abridged version (52 minutes) of the award-winning feature documentary. The documentary premiered on NOVA (PBS) on May 13, 2008 and was released on September 8, 2008.

Directed by Mary Olive Smith and produced by Steven Engel, A Walk to Beautiful follows the long journey of five women who travel from rural areas to receive treatment at Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital for a condition they suffer from known as obstetric fistula. Deemed as an outcast from their families and their community, the hospital is their only hope.

Winners for this Emmy are scheduled to be announced on Monday, September 21, 2009 at Lincoln Center. Moving and heart-rending, A Walk to Beautiful is an ambitious documentary which has already won in our eyes.
