Elite runners from Ethiopia triumph at Newport 10K in Jersey City

Niduse, 39, and Buzunesh Deba, 22, both of the Bronx were the respective fastest male and female finishers at yesterday’s Seventh Annual Newport 10K Road Race.

The LeFrak Organization, developers of Jersey City’s Newport Community, have announced the first place finishers of the Seventh Annual Newport 10,000 Road Race, sponsored by Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP. Two elite runners, who are both natives of Ethiopia, led the pack of more than 1,200 athletes.

The first-place men’s finisher was 39-year-old Ketema Nidusse of the Bronx, NY with a finish time of 29 minutes and 41 seconds. The first-place women’s finisher was 22-year-old Buzunesh Deba, also of the Bronx, with a finish time of 33 minutes and 48 seconds.

The Newport 10k Road Race drew an impressive field of American and international runners vyingfor $12,000 in prize money. It took place along the Jersey Citywaterfront, starting and finishing in the community of Newport.

Announcing the start of this year’s race was City Councilman and avid runner Steven M. Fulop.

“The Newport 10k is an unbelievable event and has been growing every year. It’s something that Jersey City is very proud to have, and we are thankful for the commitment from The LeFrak Organization, developers of Newport,” said Councilman Fulop. “This event gives the city a terrific opportunity to showcase not only our great runners, but also our great city.”

The Newport 10,000 is one of the fastest courses in the Tri-State Area, featuring flat and local

roads that allow runners to compete for their personal best. The race also offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, providing a unique and enjoyable experience for spectators and participants.

The race will once again serve as the 2010 USA Track & Field (USATF) NJ

Men’s and Women’s Open 10K Championship Race.
